The Hourglass Method (Descriptive Writing)

The Hourglass Method is a strategy we use for planning creative writing. This method uses the structure of an hourglass to model different areas of focus in your writing. It is essential that this approach is used when planning a response to Q5, Language Paper 1.

Long shot: Set the scene. Weather/Mood/Atmosphere.

Mid shot: Focus on something specific. Buildings/Nature

Close-up: Zoom in. Character/Detail

Mid shot: Zoom out slightly. Senses/Deeper meaning.

Long shot: Describe the scene again, but with a change.
